YI ZHAO

about Yi
For many years, I thought I am only a musician, who learned how to play the violin to express my own thoughts and emotions. I was dedicated with music in limited ways for decades and started to get comfortable. I decided to challenge myself to leave my previous job in Colorado and hoping to seek other opportunities. I regained my courage to audition for different orchestras and didn’t go anywhere for a while until I came to the Minnesota Orchestra.
I found more connections between music to the people around me. I have become more true to myself along the way, with passion to observe the life around me and eager to hear other people’s life stories. I am lucky to have music and violin as a wonderful bridge to help me explore more wonderful things.

Want to know more..
Watching and hearing different people’s life and learn what they have learned in their life really stimulates me to understand the art form that I am in love with. Of course, practice violin can be boring time to time, and I always find ways to excuse myself to not doing it (If you want to talk about that with me, and I can tell you endless stories that I skip practicing when I was a child). But playing and practice the violin with the right purpose and goals are extremely important to me.
Many people say if what you love to become the job you do is the best thing in the world. I have to say I agree part of that saying, but not all. I will be equally happy if I don’t do music as my job to support my life. I think my vision in life is to achieve balance with open options sometime, not feel restricted. Music is a great gift that I have with me to teach me how to see the world openly with more dimensions. I found more truth to myself and others through music. Like my father used to say: “music never lies. No matter how skillful someone is, you can always find trace to understand who they truly are through their music.”
